An afternoon to learn about the supports and services available, and to get prepared in advance of storm season and potential future natural disasters.

Recent years have shown just how differently severe weather on the Gold Coast can particularly impact the hinterland. While storms, flooding, road closures, power outages and communication disruptions can affect the entire City, residents in hinterland communities often face unique challenges due to geography, access routes and infrastructure. Being prepared isn't just about what supplies you have at home. It's also about knowing where to find information, understanding available support services, and having strong community connections before disaster strikes.
Join us for a free Disaster Resilience & Preparedness community event designed specifically for Gold Coast hinterland residents.
Whether you've recently moved to the area, experienced the impacts of previous storms, or would simply like a refresher ahead of the upcoming storm season, this event will provide practical information, local knowledge and opportunities to connect with people who understand the realities of living in the hinterland.
Hear from emergency services, disaster management experts and local organisations covering topics including:
- Emergency preparedness and disaster planning
- Heatwaves and community health
- Food safety during power outages
- Communications and staying connected during emergencies
- Generators, solar energy and battery systems
- Bushfire readiness
- Septic and biocycle systems during outages
- Local emergency management and recovery support
- Community facilities and places of refuge during disaster events
Meet and chat with representatives from Queensland Police Service, State Emergency Service, local Rural Fire Brigade, Queensland Health, City of Gold Coast Disaster and Emergency Management Unit, Telstra/NBN representatives, Red Cross, local Neighbourhood Watch groups, and more local community groups and support services.
Most importantly, you'll have the chance to connect with fellow residents from across the hinterland.
Some of the most valuable lessons come from hearing the experiences of neighbours who live just around the corner or up the road. Learn what worked during previous storm events, share ideas, build local connections and strengthen the networks that help communities recover and support one another when disasters occur.
Registration desk opens from 12:30pm, Speaker program commences at 1:00pm.
