The Gold Coast is getting hotter, with more frequent and intense heatwaves putting pressure on how we live, build and afford to cool our homes. This session launches the City’s new Heat Resilient Design Guideline - the third in a suite alongside flood and bushfire guidance - developed with JDA Co, Meridian Urban and the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre. It sets out clear, practical steps for designing new homes and improving existing ones, so they perform better in the heat.
Hear from Dr James Davidson, a leading climate-adaptive architect, and Dr Alan Green, a building scientist specialising in heat and airflow, as they break down what works. They’ll walk through straightforward design moves - like getting orientation right, adding effective shading, improving ventilation, and choosing the right materials and landscaping - that can make a real difference to comfort and energy bills. Whether you’re a homeowner, small-scale developer or design professional, you’ll leave with practical ideas you can apply straight away.
