ArtLab – Beneath the Shadows

Saturday 09 May 2026 | 10:30 AM

Surfers Paradise
Kids can to explore ideas, materials and techniques that respond to HOTA Gallery exhibitions to create unique artworks of their own.

Reflections (Barmah Forest) by Yorta Yorta painter Lin Onus teaches us that we can see multiple perspectives at once. The surface of the water acts like a mirror and a portal revealing the skies above us and the depths below.

In this workshop we’ll create a multi-layered image looking at the surface of the water in creeks and waterholes using watercolour painting techniques. We’ll then trace shadows onto a translucent layer and play with the compositional possibilities of concealing and revealing detail.

We encourage you and your adult to explore the Beneath the Surface exhibition before or after the making activity.

Recommended for ages 6–12 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult or carer and cannot be left unsupervised at any time. Thank you for your understanding.
