February 13th marks the anniversary of the National Apology, in which Kevin Rudd (then Prime Minister) stood before Parliament in 2008 and made a formal apology to the First Nations people. This apology was in reference to the Stolen Generations, a period in recent Australian History, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children were forcibly removed from their homes and country under “The Assimilation Policy”. These forced separations officially took place between 1910 and 1970, yet their consequences continue to have a profound and undeniable impact on First Nations communities.
“For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry,” said Kevin Rudd. “To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.”
